Designing for Machines That Learn

Most interface design assumes the system behaves the same way twice. You design a button, it does the same thing every time someone clicks it. AI-native products break that assumption, and most of our design instincts break along with it.

When the system's output can genuinely surprise you — and surprise the person using it — the job shifts from specifying exact behavior to designing the boundaries the behavior lives inside. That's a different discipline, and we're still building the vocabulary for it.

More on this as we keep learning it the hard way.
